Il 29 maggio 1453 gli ottomani di Maometto II dilagano in Costantinopoli saccheggiando e massacrando. I vincitori entrarono nella basilica di Santa Sofia e la trasformarono subito in moschea. In occidente, la caduta della millenaria capitale dell'Impero Romano d'Oriente provocò un'impressione fortissima: la terra, che da quel momento iniziò a chiamarsi Turchia, era stata patria delle più fiorenti comunità e vestigia cristiane.
Turks and Europe: The fall of Constantinople 1453
On 29 May 1453 the Ottomans of Mehmet II spread in Constantinople with ravages and massacres. The winners entered the basilica of St. Sophie and transformed it into a mosque. In Occident, the fall of the thousand-year capital of the Eastern Roman Empire caused a very strong impression: the land, that from that moment was called Turkey, had been the homeland of the most flourishing Christian communities and traces.
